Dr. Hermann Beyer-Thoma comes from Kitzingen am Main. In 1973, he began studying Eastern European and Modern History, Slavic Studies and Political Science in Munich. He received his doctorate there in 1987 with a thesis on the Finnish Communists. After various third-party funded projects, he obtained a permanent position as a research associate at the Institute for Eastern European Studies in Munich in 1992, later in Regensburg. In 2008 he became editor of the "Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas". He has always been particularly interested in German-Russian migration relations, and remained committed to this field even after his retirement in 2018.
